Pet Vaccinations
Vaccines are an essential part of preventive care and are typically administered as part of the wellness visits. Just like human vaccines, pet vaccines protect against diseases—some of which can be fatal. We base our vaccine recommendations and schedules on each pet’s breed, age, and lifestyle. However, we typically recommend a series of core pet vaccines for dogs and cats, which are listed below. We only use mercury-free vaccines, and our feline vaccines are non-adjuvanted for your pet’s safety.
Core Vaccines for Dogs and Cats
Pet vaccinations fall into two different categories: core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are those that are considered to be essential for pets.
The core vaccines for dogs are:
- Rabies
- Distemper
- Parvovirus
- Adenovirus/hepatitis
The core cat vaccines are:
- Feline panleukopenia
- Feline herpesvirus-1
- Calicivirus
We also offer vaccine titers for distemper, parvovirus, calicivirus, herpesvirus, and panleukopenia. Vaccine titers help us assess your pet’s protection (immunity) against these diseases, helping us to determine if a booster vaccination is needed.
Non-Core Vaccines
Non-core vaccines may or may not be recommended by your veterinarian based on your pet’s lifestyle or risk of exposure. For example, if your dog often goes to doggie daycare while you’re at work, they’ll need to be protected against a highly contagious illness called Bordetella, also known as kennel cough. If your cat is an indoor/outdoor pet or if they’re exposed to cats who spend time outdoors, then your veterinarian will likely recommend that they receive the vaccination against feline leukemia.
When your pet comes in for their wellness exam, we’ll discuss their lifestyle and needs with you in detail. Our veterinarians will then recommend a customized vaccination schedule to follow to ensure that your pet receives the vaccination protection that they need.
